When moral order (dharma) is threatened, nature itself is portrayed as reflecting that disturbance through ominous signs; the sages respond not with panic but with sober discernment, interpreting events ethically and warning of consequences.
A pervasive darkness arises in all directions. The seers, carrying large torches, come out and gather together, then articulate their assessment of the ominous phenomena (utpātas) occurring at that time.
