Concept: Dietary restraint—especially in Kārttika—supports purity and the efficacy of Vaiṣṇava vows.

Application: During sacred months (especially Kārttika), avoid intoxicants/ferments and foods considered heavy or tamasic in the vow’s rule-set; replace with simple sāttvika meals and increased japa/lamps/charity.

Primary Rasa: shanta

Visual Art Cues: {"scene_description":"A Kārttika month kitchen scene rendered as sacred discipline: a devotee turns away from jars of fermented drink, honey pots, and meat, while choosing simple grains and vegetables placed beside a lit lamp and a small Viṣṇu image. The composition emphasizes restraint as worship—hands in a gentle refusing gesture, eyes calm and resolved.","primary_figures":["vratī devotee","household helper (optional)","Śrī Hari (small shrine icon)"],"setting":"Traditional home kitchen-courtyard with storage jars, grinding stone, lamp, and a small altar niche.","lighting_mood":"golden dawn","color_palette":["mustard yellow","clay brown","lamp gold","sage green","charcoal black"],"tanjore_prompt":"Tanjore painting style: Kārttika-niyama tableau—devotee near a small Viṣṇu shrine, rejecting fermented drink and meat depicted symbolically in side panels; gold-leaf lamp flames, rich reds/greens, ornate borders, devotional clarity with moral symbolism.","pahari_prompt":"Pahari miniature style: domestic courtyard with delicate utensils and jars; devotee calmly selecting simple foods, a small lamp glowing; cool, restrained palette with fine brushwork and gentle narrative symbolism.","kerala_mural_prompt":"Kerala mural style: bold outlined jars labeled by form, devotee in profile with a lamp and Viṣṇu panel; warm pigment palette, didactic temple-wall feel, symmetrical arrangement.","pichwai_prompt":"Pichwai cloth painting style: decorative border of tulasi and lotus motifs framing a vow-keeper’s simple meal; side motifs show forbidden items crossed by ornamental vines; deep blue background with gold highlights and festival-like orderliness."}

Audio Atmosphere: {"recitation_mood":"meditative","suggested_raga":"Durga","pace":"slow-meditative","voice_tone":"serene","sound_elements":["lamp wick crackle","soft bell","morning birds","quiet household ambience"]}

K
Kārttika

FAQs

It prescribes dietary restraint in Kārttika, emphasizing avoidance of fermented liquor (sauvīraka), black gram (māṣa), meat, and honey as part of vrata-like discipline.

Kārttika is traditionally treated in Purāṇic literature as a particularly sacred month for intensified self-control, purity, and devotional observances; hence restrictions are stressed more strongly.

The verse teaches self-regulation and purity through mindful consumption—using food discipline as a practical expression of dharma and spiritual focus.
