Damayantī’s Oath and Vāyu’s Testimony
न इदं च सदृशं भद्ठे मिथुन मम पुत्रयो: । अतो दृष्टवैव सहसा बाष्पमुत्सृष्टवानहम्,“भद्रे! ये दोनों बालक मेरे पुत्र और पुत्रीके समान हैं, इसीलिये इन्हें देखकर सहसा मेरे नेत्रोंसे आँसू बहने लगे
na idaṃ ca sadṛśaṃ bhadre mithunaṃ mama putrayoḥ | ato dṛṣṭvaiva sahasā bāṣpam utsṛṣṭavān aham ||
ಭದ್ರೇ! ಈ ಜೋಡಿ ನನ್ನ ಸ್ವಂತ ಮಕ್ಕಳಂತೆಯೇ ಕಾಣುತ್ತದೆ; ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ ಅವರನ್ನು ಕಂಡ ಕ್ಷಣವೇ ನನ್ನ ಕಣ್ಣಿಂದ ಅಚಾನಕವಾಗಿ ಕಣ್ಣೀರು ಹರಿಯಿತು.
बृहृदश्चव उवाच
The verse highlights empathy and familial identification: seeing vulnerable children who resemble one’s own naturally awakens compassion, reminding the listener that dharmic sensitivity includes being moved by others’ suffering rather than remaining indifferent.
Bṛhadaśva, speaking to a woman addressed respectfully as “bhadre,” describes his immediate emotional reaction upon seeing two children; because they reminded him of his own, he involuntarily shed tears.
