आश्रित्य यं वयं नाथ दुःखान्येतानि सेहिम । “वे ही महाबली अर्जुन आज मृत्युके अधीन कैसे हो गये? ये वे ही धनंजय मेरी आशालताको छिजन्न-भिन्न करके धरतीपर पड़े हैं; जिन्हें अपना रक्षक बनाकर और जिनका ही भारी भरोसा करके हमलोग ये सारे दुःख सहते आये हैं,विद्यमाने धने लोभाद्‌ दानभोगविवर्जित: । पश्चान्नास्तीति यो ब्रूयात्‌ सो$क्षयं नरकं॑ व्रजेत्‌ धन पास रहते हुए भी जो लोभवश दान और भोगसे रहित है तथा (माँगनेवाले ब्राह्मणादिको एवं न्याययुक्त भोगके लिये स्त्री-पुत्रादिको) पीछेसे यह कह देता है कि मेरे पास कुछ नहीं है, वह अक्षय नरकमें जाता है

āśritya yaṁ vayaṁ nātha duḥkhāny etāni sehima | vidyamāne dhane lobhād dānabhogavivarjitaḥ | paścān nāstīti yo brūyāt so'kṣayaṁ narakaṁ vrajet ||

ವೈಶಂಪಾಯನನು ಹೇಳಿದನು—ಓ ನಾಥ! ಅವನ ಆಶ್ರಯದಿಂದಲೇ ನಾವು ಈ ದುಃಖಗಳನ್ನು ಸಹಿಸಿದ್ದೇವೆ. ಆದರೆ ಧನ ಇದ್ದರೂ ಲೋಭದಿಂದ ದಾನವನ್ನೂ ಮಾಡದೆ, ನ್ಯಾಯಯುಕ್ತ ಭೋಗವನ್ನೂ ಅನುಭವಿಸದೆ, ನಂತರ ಬೇಡುವವರಿಗಾಗಲಿ ಹಕ್ಕುದಾರರಿಗಾಗಲಿ “ನನ್ನ ಬಳಿ ಏನೂ ಇಲ್ಲ” ಎಂದು ಹೇಳುವವನು ಅಕ್ಷಯ ನರಕಕ್ಕೆ ಹೋಗುತ್ತಾನೆ।

Wealth carries dharmic obligations: one should practice dāna (giving) and bhoga (rightful, responsible enjoyment). Hoarding out of greed and then falsely claiming poverty to avoid giving or supporting rightful dependents is condemned and said to lead to severe, lasting karmic punishment.
