Kuvalāśva’s Lineage and Uttaṅka’s Petition concerning Dhundhu (धुन्धु-प्रसङ्गः)

Educational Q&A

Truthfulness is a central pillar of dharma: even a king who has achieved a difficult goal must not cling to falsehood or improper possession, for Varuṇa—guardian of ṛta and oaths—punishes deceit. Ethical success requires returning what is not one’s own and maintaining integrity between social duties.

Vāmadeva addresses a king and demands the return of his Vāmya horses, acknowledging that the king’s otherwise impossible task was completed through them. He warns that the king is in a sensitive position between Brahmin and Kshatriya obligations, and that if he persists in untruth or wrongdoing, Varuṇa may bind him with terrible nooses.
