Educational Q&A

The verse defines varṇa-based duties in terms of social function: brāhmaṇas sustain sacred knowledge and ritual (including teaching and officiating), kṣatriyas sustain order through protection and rule, and vaiśyas sustain material life through nourishment and productive maintenance. Dharma is presented as role-ethics aimed at supporting the whole community.

Vaiśampāyana, as narrator, states a normative classification of duties—clarifying what kinds of work are considered proper supports for each social order—within the broader Vana Parva discussions on righteous conduct and social stability.
