Educational Q&A

The verse underscores the moral weight of counsel and agency in war: a leader’s resolve can be intensified by advice, and the consequences—fear, anguish, and suffering—fall upon those who choose hostility. It also highlights the inevitability of distress for one who persists in adharma when confronted by superior valor and strategy.

Sañjaya describes a future battle scene: the chief of the Śinis, prompted by Sañjaya, will shower arrows like a rain-cloud and overwhelm the enemy’s foremost fighters. As a result, Dhṛtarāṣṭra’s son (Duryodhana) will be consumed by grief and anxiety amid the fighting.
