Udyoga-parva Adhyāya 34 — Vidura’s Counsel on Deliberation, Speech-Discipline, and Dharmic Kingship

pūrve vayasi tat kuryād yena vṛddhaḥ sukhaṃ vaset | yāvajjīvena tat kuryād yena pretya sukhaṃ vaset ||

Educational Q&A

Plan and live ethically with long horizons: cultivate habits and actions in youth that secure well-being in old age, and perform dharmic, merit-producing deeds throughout life so that one’s condition after death is also auspicious.

In Vidura’s counsel (nīti) during the Udyoga Parva, he offers practical and moral guidance, urging responsible conduct and sustained dharmic action rather than impulsive choices that bring suffering later in life and beyond.
