राज्ञोऽभिषेकः, अराजकदोषः, दण्डधारणस्य आवश्यकता

Royal Consecration, the Fault of Kinglessness, and the Necessity of Enforcement

बलात्कृतेषु भूतेषु परित्राणं कुरूद्गह | शरणागतेषु कौरव्य कुर्वन्‌ गार्हस्थ्यमावसेत्‌

bhīṣma uvāca | balātkṛteṣu bhūteṣu paritrāṇaṃ kuru udgaha | śaraṇāgateṣu kauravya kurvan gārhasthyam āvaset, kurunandana ||

ಭೀಷ್ಮನು ಹೇಳಿದರು—ಓ ಕುರುವಂಶಶ್ರೇಷ್ಠ, ಓ ಕುರುನಂದನ! ಬಲಾತ್ಕಾರದಿಂದ ಪೀಡಿತರಾದ ಜೀವಿಗಳು ಶರಣಾಗಿ ಬಂದಾಗ, ಅವರನ್ನು ಅಪಾಯದಿಂದ ರಕ್ಷಿಸಿ ಉದ್ಧರಿಸಬೇಕು. ಹೀಗೆ ಮಾಡುವವನು ಗಾರ್ಹಸ್ಥ್ಯಧರ್ಮದಲ್ಲಿ ನಿಜವಾಗಿ ನೆಲೆಸುತ್ತಾನೆ ಮತ್ತು ಸಮ್ಯಕ್ ಆಚರಿಸಲ್ಪಟ್ಟ ಗಾರ್ಹಸ್ಥ್ಯದ ಪುಣ್ಯಫಲದಲ್ಲಿ ಪಾಲುಗಾರನಾಗುತ್ತಾನೆ.

A householder (and, by extension, a ruler) fulfills dharma by actively protecting those who have suffered violence and who seek refuge; such protection is itself a source of religious merit.
