Moksha is presented as the fourth and highest human aim, fundamentally different in purpose and qualities from dharma, artha, and kama, because it seeks freedom from bondage rather than worldly order, prosperity, or pleasure.
In the Shanti Parva’s instruction section, Bhishma continues his discourse to Yudhishthira on the aims of life, distinguishing liberation (moksha) from the other three goals and preparing the ground for a more philosophical discussion of renunciation and ultimate good.
