Prāyaścitta-vidhāna: Tapas, Dāna, Vrata, and Proportional Expiation (प्रायश्चित्तविधानम्)
yathā pravrajito bhikṣus tathaiva sve gṛhe vaset
The verse teaches inner renunciation: even while remaining in household life, one should cultivate the same non-attachment, simplicity, and freedom from possessiveness that characterize a true mendicant.
In the didactic setting of the Śānti Parva, Vyāsa delivers an ethical instruction, emphasizing that spiritual discipline is not limited to outward renunciation; the householder too can live with a renunciant’s mindset.
