Educational Q&A

The verse foregrounds the dharmic role of a rightful spiritual guide: when Bṛhaspati becomes the devas’ purohita, cosmic and social order is strengthened, bringing ‘nirvṛti’ (settled well-being). It implies that proper counsel and sacred learning are stabilizing forces for governance and community.

Bhīṣma begins a new episode for Yudhiṣṭhira, setting the scene in a remote cosmic past: Bṛhaspati, born as Aṅgiras’s son, is appointed priest of the gods, and the gods rejoice—preparing the ground for the subsequent account involving divine rites and the revelation of higher divine glory.
