Educational Q&A

The verse frames a philosophical problem: when reality is described sometimes as one and sometimes as many, the seeker perceives no decisive difference unless a proper, reasoned explanation is given. It calls for a disciplined clarification of how unity and plurality (and by extension jñāna and karma) are to be understood without confusion.

In the Shanti Parva’s dialogue context, Kapila addresses a revered teacher (“Bhagavān”) and requests a precise, logically grounded account of the issue of oneness versus separateness—seeking guidance to resolve apparent contradictions in doctrine and practice.
