Kapila and Syūmaraśmi on Renunciation, Householder Support, and Epistemic Authority
akāraṇo hi naivāsti dharmaḥ sūkṣmo hi jājale | bhūta-bhavya-artham eveha dharma-pravacanaṃ kṛtam ||
Dharma is not arbitrary: it has a purpose and rationale, though it is subtle and requires discernment. Its exposition is meant to benefit living beings across time—addressing both present realities and future consequences.
In the Śānti Parva’s instructional dialogue, Tūladhāra addresses the ascetic Jājali, emphasizing that teachings on dharma are given with a deliberate aim: the welfare of beings, and guidance that remains relevant beyond a single moment.
