Jñāna-plava (The Raft of Knowledge): Svabhāva, Prajñā, and the Ascent to Ātmajñāna
samprāptānāṁ ca pūjyānāṁ kāmād artheṣu devala | yathopapattiṁ kurvanti śaktimantaḥ kṛtavratāḥ ||
One should honor and assist worthy, venerable people who approach with legitimate aims, making sincere effort to help them succeed—yet doing so within what is feasible and appropriate (yathopapatti), guided by disciplined vows and strength used for service.
In Jaigiṣavya’s instruction to Devala, he describes the conduct of powerful, vow-observant sages or great men: when respected persons come seeking the fulfillment of specific purposes, such men attempt, to the best of their capacity, to accomplish those requests.
