Adhyāya 223: Nāradasya Guṇa-kathana

Catalogue of Nārada’s Virtues

purandara! tvaṁ svāśuddha-buddhi-kāraṇāt mama purataḥ ātma-praśaṁsāṁ karoṣi. yadā mama-sadṛśī sthitiḥ tavāpi bhaviṣyati, tadā tvam īdṛśīṁ vācaṁ na vaktum śakṣyasi.

Educational Q&A

Self-praise rooted in an ‘impure’ or unrefined understanding is ethically flawed; true perspective arises when one undergoes comparable conditions, at which point pride and boastful speech naturally fall away.

Within the Bali–Indra (Vāsava) dialogue narrated under Bhīṣma’s instruction in Mokṣadharma, Bali rebukes Indra for boasting, warning that when Indra faces a similar reversal or constraint, he will no longer be able to speak with such self-congratulation.
