भीष्मजी कहते हैं--राजन्! वे गीध और गीदड़ दोनों ही भूखे थे और अपने उद्देश्यकी सिद्धिके लिये मृतकके बन्धु-बान्धवोंसे बातें करते थे। गीध कहता था कि सूर्य अस्त हो गये और सियार कहता था नहीं ।।
svakāryabaddhakakṣau tau rājan gṛdhro 'tha jambukaḥ | kṣutpipāsāpariśrāntau śāstram ālambya jalpataḥ ||
ಭೀಷ್ಮನು ಹೇಳಿದರು—ಓ ರಾಜನೇ! ಗಿಡುಗ ಮತ್ತು ನರಿಯು ಇಬ್ಬರೂ ತಮ್ಮ ತಮ್ಮ ಕಾರ್ಯಸಿದ್ಧಿಗೆ ಕಟ್ಟಿಬದ್ಧರಾಗಿದ್ದರು. ಹಸಿವು-ಬಾಯಾರಿಕೆಯಿಂದ ಕಂಗೆಟ್ಟು, ಶಾಸ್ತ್ರವನ್ನು ಆಧಾರ ಮಾಡಿಕೊಂಡು ವಾದಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು—ಒಬ್ಬನು ‘ಸೂರ್ಯ ಅಸ್ತಮಿಸಿದ’ ಎಂದರೆ, ಮತ್ತೊಬ್ಬನು ‘ಇಲ್ಲ’ ಎಂದನು.
