भीष्म उवाच अत्र ते वर्तयिष्यामि नीतिमापत्सु भारत । उत्सृज्यापि घृणां काले यथा वर्तेत भूमिप:

Transliteration

bhīṣma uvāca | atra te vartayiṣyāmi nītim āpatsu bhārata | utsṛjyāpi ghṛṇāṃ kāle yathā varteta bhūmipaḥ ||

Translation

ಭೀಷ್ಮನು ಹೇಳಿದನು— ಓ ಭಾರತ! ಆಪತ್ತಿನ ಕಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ ಅನುಸರಿಸಬೇಕಾದ ನೀತಿಯನ್ನು ನಾನು ನಿನಗೆ ವಿವರಿಸುತ್ತೇನೆ—ಕಾಲದ ಅವಶ್ಯಕತೆ ಬಂದಾಗ ರಾಜನು ಕರುಣೆಯನ್ನೂ ಬದಿಗಿಟ್ಟು, ಸಮಯೋಚಿತ ದೃಢತೆಯಿಂದ ಹೇಗೆ ವರ್ತಿಸಬೇಕು ಎಂಬುದನ್ನು.
