Kośa, Bala, and Maryādā: Treasury, Capacity, and Enforceable Limits (कोश-बल-मर्यादा)

स्वधर्मानन्तरा वृत्तिर्जात्याननुपजीवत: । जहत: प्रथमं कल्पमनुकल्पेन जीवनम्‌

svadharmānantara vṛttir jātyān anupajīvataḥ | jahataḥ prathamaṃ kalpam anukalpena jīvanam ||

ಭೀಷ್ಮನು ಹೇಳಿದರು—ತನ್ನ ಜನ್ಮಸ್ಥಾನಕ್ಕೆ ವಿಧಿಸಲ್ಪಟ್ಟ ಸ್ವಧರ್ಮವನ್ನು ಆಧರಿಸಿ ಜೀವನ ಸಾಗಿಸಲಾಗದಾಗ, ಪರ್ಯಾಯ ಜೀವನೋಪಾಯವೂ ಉಪದೇಶಿಸಲಾಗಿದೆ. ಆಪತ್ತಿನ ಕಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ ಮೊದಲ ಕ್ರಮ—ಅಂದರೆ ಸ್ವಧರ್ಮಾನುಸಾರ ಜೀವನ—ತ್ಯಜಿಸಬೇಕಾದವನು, ಪ್ರಾಣರಕ್ಷಣಾರ್ಥವಾಗಿ ದ್ವಿತೀಯ ಕ್ರಮವನ್ನು ಅನುಸರಿಸಿ, ಅಗತ್ಯವಿದ್ದರೆ ತನ್ನಿಗಿಂತ ಕೆಳ ವರ್ಣದ ವೃತ್ತಿಯನ್ನೂ ಸ್ವೀಕರಿಸಿ ಬದುಕಬಹುದು; ಅಕ್ರಮಕ್ಕೆ ಜಾರದೆ ಜೀವ ಉಳಿಯಲೆಂದು।
