Aftermath of Karṇa’s Fall: Śalya’s Address to Duryodhana
evaṁ gate kiṁ ca mayādya śakyaṁ kāryaṁ kartuṁ vigrahe sūtajasya
The verse highlights human limitation in the face of an overwhelming situation: when events have reached a decisive turn, one may recognize that personal effort has little scope. It also reflects the psychological weight of confronting a formidable opponent (here, Karṇa), prompting humility and realism about what can be achieved.
Sañjaya, narrating the battlefield events, expresses that the situation has become such that he sees no effective action available to him in the conflict involving Karṇa, referred to pointedly as “the son of a charioteer” (sūtaja).
