Karna Reforms the Host and Multiple Duels Converge
ब्राह्मण: किल नो गेहमध्यगच्छत् पुरातिथि: । आचार ं तत्र सम्प्रेक्ष्य प्रीतो वचनमत्रवीत्
brāhmaṇaḥ kila no geham adhyagacchat purātithiḥ | ācāraṃ tatra samprekṣya prīto vacanam abravīt ||
ಒಮ್ಮೆ ಒಬ್ಬ ಬ್ರಾಹ್ಮಣ—ಪುರಾತನ ಅತಿಥಿ—ನಮ್ಮ ಮನೆಗೆ ಬಂದನು. ಅಲ್ಲಿ ಇರುವ ಆಚರಣೆಯನ್ನು ನೋಡಿ ಸಂತೋಷಗೊಂಡು ಈ ಮಾತುಗಳನ್ನು ಹೇಳಿದನು.
कर्ण उवाच
The verse foregrounds atithi-dharma and ācāra: a household’s ethical standing is recognized through its lived conduct and hospitality, which can elicit approval even from a discerning Brahmin guest.
Karna begins a recollection: a Brahmin guest once stayed at his home, observed their household customs and behavior, became pleased, and then spoke—setting up a moral or instructive statement in the following verses.
