Educational Q&A

The verse highlights how the fall of a revered teacher and commander destabilizes an entire polity: when adharma-driven strategy culminates in the death of an elder, it produces fear, confusion, and a desperate search for authority. Ethically, it points to the cascading consequences of compromised means in war—victory-seeking without restraint breeds inner turmoil and further escalation.

After Droṇa’s death, Duryodhana and the allied kings are mentally shaken. They go to Droṇa’s son Aśvatthāmā, indicating a shift in leadership and the beginning of a darker, more vengeful phase of the conflict.
