Dhṛtarāṣṭra–Sañjaya Dialogue: Praise of the Host and Inquiry after the Breach
teṣv anīkeṣu sarveṣu sthiteṣv āhavanandiṣu | bhāradvājo mahārāja jayadratham athābravīt ||
The verse foregrounds the ethical tension of war: once armies are arrayed and eager for combat, leaders’ words carry heightened moral weight. Drona’s address to Jayadratha signals that strategy and duty (kṣatriya-dharma) are about to be invoked, reminding that decisions made at the moment of engagement shape both outcome and responsibility.
Sañjaya reports to Dhṛtarāṣṭra that the troops have formed up in their battle arrays and are eager for fighting. At that moment, Drona (called Bhāradvāja) turns to Jayadratha and begins speaking to him, setting up the next instruction or command within the unfolding battle scene.
