धृतराष्ट्रस्य वनप्रस्थानानुज्ञा | Permission for Dhṛtarāṣṭra’s Forest-Retirement
तानागतानभिप्रेक्ष्य समस्तं च सुहृज्जनम् । ब्राह्मणांश्र महीपाल नानादेशसमागतान्,अवश्यमेव वक्तव्यमिति कृत्वा ब्रवीमि व: । एष न्यासो मया दत्त: सर्वेषां वो युधिष्ठिर:
tān āgatān abhiprekṣya samastaṃ ca suhṛjjanam | brāhmaṇāṃś ca mahīpāla nānādeśa-samāgatān | avaśyam eva vaktavyam iti kṛtvā bravīmi vaḥ | eṣa nyāso mayā dattaḥ sarveṣāṃ vo yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ||
ಬಂದಿದ್ದ ಎಲ್ಲರನ್ನೂ—ಸಮಸ್ತ ಸುಹೃಜ್ಜನರನ್ನು ಮತ್ತು ನಾನಾ ದೇಶಗಳಿಂದ ಬಂದ ಬ್ರಾಹ್ಮಣರನ್ನು—ನೋಡಿ ರಾಜನು “ಇದು ನಿಶ್ಚಯವಾಗಿ ಹೇಳಲೇಬೇಕು” ಎಂದು ತೀರ್ಮಾನಿಸಿ ಹೀಗೆಂದನು—“ಈ ನ್ಯಾಸ, ಈ ಒಪ್ಪಿಸಲಾದ ಹೊಣೆ, ನಾನು ನಿಮ್ಮೆಲ್ಲರ ಮೇಲೂ—ಮತ್ತು ಯುಧಿಷ್ಠಿರನ ಮೇಲೂ—ಇಟ್ಟಿದ್ದೇನೆ.”
वैशम्पायन उवाच
Public duty and moral accountability: when a leader recognizes that a matter concerns the community, he must speak plainly and formally entrust responsibility (nyāsa) to those who should bear it—especially to the rightful dharmic authority, here associated with Yudhiṣṭhira.
A king, seeing assembled well-wishers and brāhmaṇas from many regions, decides that a necessary statement must be made. He then addresses the gathering and declares that an entrusted charge/responsibility has been placed upon them all, with explicit mention of Yudhiṣṭhira.
