Adhyāya 9: Pratiśruta-Dāna
The Duty to Fulfill Promised Gifts
ततः परासून् खादन्तं शृगालं वानरोउब्रवीत् । श्मशानमध्ये सम्प्रेक्ष्य पूर्वजातिमनुस्मरन्
tataḥ parāsūn khādantaṁ śṛgālaṁ vānaro ’bravīt | śmaśānamadhye samprekṣya pūrvajātim anusmaran ||
ಆಗ ಶ್ಮಶಾನದಲ್ಲಿ ಶವಗಳನ್ನು ತಿನ್ನುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ನರಿಯನ್ನು ನೋಡಿ ಕೋತಿ ಮಾತಾಡಿತು. ಶ್ಮಶಾನದ ಮಧ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಅವನನ್ನು ಕಂಡು, ತನ್ನ ಪೂರ್ವಜನ್ಮವನ್ನು ಸ್ಮರಿಸಿ ಅದು ಕೇಳಿತು— “ಸಹೋದರಾ! ನೀನು ಪೂರ್ವಜನ್ಮದಲ್ಲಿ ಯಾವ ಭಯಂಕರ ಪಾಪವನ್ನು ಮಾಡಿದ್ದೆ, ಅದರಿಂದ ಇಂದು ಈ ಶ್ಮಶಾನದಲ್ಲಿ ದುರ್ಗಂಧಯುಕ್ತ, ಜುಗುಪ್ಸಿತ ಶವಗಳನ್ನು ತಿನ್ನಬೇಕಾಗಿದೆ?”
