Adhyāya 57: Tapas–Dāna Phala
On the Fruits of Austerity and Giving
क्वचिदप्सरसां संघान् गन्धर्वाणां च पार्थिव
kvacid apsarasāṃ saṅghān gandharvāṇāṃ ca pārthiva | pṛthvīnātha! kvacid jhuṇḍa-kī-jhuṇḍa apsarāḥ vihāraṃ kurvanti sma | kvacid gandharvāṇāṃ samudāyāḥ svapriyatamānām āliṅgana-pāśe baddhāḥ santi sma | tān sarvān rājā dadarśa | te kadācid enaṃ dṛśyante sma kadācin na dṛśyante sma ||
ಭೀಷ್ಮನು ಹೇಳಿದನು—ಓ ರಾಜನೇ, ಪೃಥ್ವೀನಾಥನೇ! ಕೆಲವೆಡೆ ಅಪ್ಸರೆಯರ ಗುಂಪುಗಳು ಆನಂದದಿಂದ ವಿಹರಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದವು; ಇನ್ನೆಡೆ ಗಂಧರ್ವರ ಸಮೂಹಗಳು ತಮ್ಮ ಪ್ರಿಯತಮೆಯರ ಆಲಿಂಗನ-ಪಾಶದಲ್ಲಿ ಬಂಧಿತರಂತೆ ಕಾಣುತ್ತಿದ್ದವು. ರಾಜನು ಅವರೆಲ್ಲರನ್ನೂ ಕಂಡನು—ಆದರೆ ಕೆಲವೊಮ್ಮೆ ಕಾಣುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು, ಕೆಲವೊಮ್ಮೆ ಕಾಣುತ್ತಿರಲಿಲ್ಲ।
