श्रीशुक उवाच अंशुमांश्च तपस्तेपे गङ्गानयनकाम्यया । कालं महान्तं नाशक्नोत् तत: कालेन संस्थित: ॥ १ ॥
śrī-śuka uvāca aṁśumāṁś ca tapas tepe gaṅgānayana-kāmyayā kālaṁ mahāntaṁ nāśaknot tataḥ kālena saṁsthitaḥ
ಶ್ರೀಶುಕನು ಹೇಳಿದರು—ಅಂಶುಮಾನನು ಗಂಗೆಯನ್ನು ಭೂಲೋಕಕ್ಕೆ ತರಬೇಕೆಂಬ ಆಶಯದಿಂದ ಬಹುಕಾಲ ತಪಸ್ಸು ಮಾಡಿದನು. ಆದರೂ ಗಂಗೆಯನ್ನು ಈ ಲೋಕಕ್ಕೆ ತರಲಾರದೆ, ಕಾಲಕ್ರಮದಲ್ಲಿ ಅವನು ದೇಹತ್ಯಾಗ ಮಾಡಿದನು।
