Udyoga Parva, Adhyāya 40 — Vidura’s Ethical Counsel and Dhṛtarāṣṭra’s Fatalistic Turn
bhagavan saṁśayaḥ kaścid dhṛtarāṣṭrasya mānasaḥ | yo na śakyo mayā vaktuṁ tvam asmai vaktum arhasi ||
The verse highlights ethical restraint and pedagogical propriety: not everyone should address every sensitive doubt. One should defer to the person who is more qualified or appropriately positioned to counsel, especially when a king’s inner conflict has moral and political consequences.
Vaiśampāyana reports that Dhṛtarāṣṭra harbors an unresolved doubt. He indicates that it is not suitable for him to answer it and requests the addressed revered authority to explain the matter directly to Dhṛtarāṣṭra.
