Udyoga Parva Adhyaya 133 — A Mother’s Counsel to Saṃjaya
पृष्ठतो<नुव्रजन्तं वा का शान्तिहदयस्य मे । यदि मैं यह देखूँ कि तू शत्रुसे मीठी-मीठी बातें करता तथा उसके पीछे-पीछे जाता है तो मेरे हृदयमें क्या शान्ति मिलेगी?
pṛṣṭhato 'nuvrajantaṃ vā kā śāntir hṛdayasya me | yadi māṃ etad dṛśyāt ki tvaṃ śatruse mīṭhī-mīṭhī bātẽ karatā tathā tasya pṛṣṭhataḥ pṛṣṭhataḥ gacchasi iti, tarhi mama hṛdaye kā śāntiḥ syāt ||
«ឬបើខ្ញុំឃើញអ្នកដើរតាមពីក្រោយគាត់—ចិត្តខ្ញុំនឹងមានសេចក្តីសុខសាន្តពីណា? បើខ្ញុំឃើញថា អ្នកនិយាយពាក្យផ្អែមល្ហែមបន្ធូរបន្ធាយចំពោះសត្រូវ ហើយបន្ទាប់មកទៅតាមក្រោយគាត់ តើចិត្តខ្ញុំនឹងស្ងប់បានដូចម្តេច?»
पुत्र उवाच
The verse highlights the ethical tension between diplomacy and loyalty: conciliatory speech toward an enemy, when perceived as siding with them, can destroy trust and inner peace within one’s own family or allies.
A son addresses someone close (likely a father/elder), expressing distress that he might see them speaking pleasantly to an enemy and even following after him; the son frames this as a cause of deep inner unrest and loss of confidence.
