Kṣātra-dharma as the Public Foundation of Dharma (क्षात्रधर्म-प्रशंसा)

अल्पान्तरगतस्यापि दशधर्मगतस्य वा । आश्रमा विहिता: सर्वे वर्जयित्वा निराशिषम्‌

alpāntaragatasyāpi daśadharmagatasya vā | āśramā vihitāḥ sarve varjayitvā nirāśiṣam, pṛthvīnātha! |

ភីષ្មៈបានមានព្រះវាចា៖ ឱ ម្ចាស់ផែនដី! ទោះបីសូទ្រាមានភាពខ្វះខាតតិចតួចប៉ុណ្ណោះ បើប្រៀបនឹងអ្នកកើតពីរដង ក្នុងសេចក្តីស្អាតសុចរិត និងសីលធម៌ល្អ ឬក៏ជាអ្នកឧស្សាហ៍ប្រតិបត្តិធម៌ដប់ប្រការ ក៏អាស្រមទាំងអស់ត្រូវបានកំណត់សម្រាប់គាត់—លើកលែងតែស្ថានភាព “និរាសិស” គឺសន្យាស (ការលះបង់)។

Educational Q&A

Bhīṣma teaches that ethical refinement and disciplined practice of dharma can qualify a Śūdra for recognized life-stages (āśramas), while still excluding the formal renunciant state (nirāśiṣa/saṃnyāsa) in this framework.

In Śānti Parva, Bhīṣma instructs the king (Yudhiṣṭhira) on dharma and social-religious order. Here he addresses which āśramas are considered permissible for a Śūdra who has demonstrated high moral conduct and commitment to the ten dharmas.
