Educational Q&A

The verse underscores the importance of lineage and rightful succession in the Mahābhārata’s ethical-political worldview: identity and authority are often established through genealogy, which supports discussions of dharma, kingship, and social order.

Vāsudeva identifies a person by stating his ancestry—he is the grandson of Dadhivāhana and the son of Diviratha—providing genealogical context that helps situate the character within a royal line.
