Educational Q&A

A Kṣatriya’s true ‘wealth’ is not private accumulation but the living trust of kingship: the people (prajāḥ) and the legitimate enjoyments/benefits of rule (rājyabhogāḥ). This frames royal prosperity as inseparable from responsibility to protect and govern.

In the Śānti Parva’s instruction on rājadharma, Bhīṣma addresses Yudhiṣṭhira (“Bhārata”) and explains the distinctive basis of a Kṣatriya’s livelihood and status: sovereignty and the subjects under his care, rather than alternative sources of wealth.
