When a leader like Duryodhana becomes unreachable by reason and dharma, ethical counsel may diagnose the situation but cannot compel reform; conflict becomes unavoidable. Vidura’s ‘truth-seeing’ counsel highlights the tragic limit of diplomacy when adharma is chosen knowingly.
Sañjaya reports to Dhṛtarāṣṭra (contextually) that Vidura has long maintained a consistent assessment: Duryodhana cannot be overcome through alternative measures such as negotiation or policy; only war will decide the outcome. The line frames the war as a consequence of persistent refusal to heed righteous advice.
