अध्याय १ — न्यग्रोधवनोपवेशनम् तथा द्रौणिनिश्चयः
Night at the Banyan and Drauṇi’s Resolve
महास्वनं महाकायं हर्यक्ष॑ं बभ्रुपिड्गलम् सुदीर्घधघोणानखरं सुपर्णमिव वेगितम्
mahāsvanaṃ mahākāyaṃ haryakṣaṃ babhrupiṅgalam | sudīrghaghrāṇanakharaṃ suparṇam iva vegitam ||
សញ្ជ័យបាននិយាយ៖ «សម្លេងវាដូចផ្គរលាន់ ហើយរាងកាយធំមហិមា; ភ្នែកមានពណ៌លឿងត្នោត ហើយខ្លួនមានពណ៌ត្នោតលាយពណ៌មាសក្រហម។ ចំពុះ និងក្រចកវាវែងខ្លាំង ហើយវាហាក់លឿនដូចគ្រុឌា»។ ការពិពណ៌នានេះបង្កើនបរិយាកាសអាក្រក់នៃការវាយប្រហារពេលយប់ ដោយបង្ហាញវត្តមានអ្នកប្រមាញ់ដ៏គួរឱ្យខ្លាច ដែលស្ទួនភាពភ័យរន្ធត់ និងអធម៌នៃការសម្លាប់ដែលជិតមកដល់។
