Upamanyu’s Longing for Milk and the Doctrine of Shiva’s Grace
akṣayā bāndhavāścaiva kulaṃ gotraṃ ca te sadā | bhaviṣyati dvijaśreṣṭha mayi bhaktiśca śāśvatī
Lord Shiva
Tattva Level: anugraha
Shiva Form: Sadashiva
Role: nurturing
It presents Shiva’s grace as twofold: worldly stability (enduring family line and gotra) and the higher gift of śāśvatī-bhakti—devotion that persists and matures toward liberation under Pati (Shiva), the Lord of souls.
The verse reflects Saguna Shiva’s compassionate, boon-giving aspect—responding to worship (often through the Linga) by granting both dharmic prosperity and steady devotion that keeps the devotee oriented to Shiva rather than merely to results.
Cultivate enduring bhakti through regular Shiva-upāsanā—japa of the Pañcākṣarī (Om Namaḥ Śivāya), Linga-abhisheka, and daily remembrance—so the boon becomes inner steadfastness rather than only external continuity.
