Sampāti’s Counsel and the Revelation of Laṅkā
लङ्कायामथ गुप्तायां सागरेण समन्ततः।सम्प्राप्य सागरस्यान्तं सम्पूर्णं शतयोजनम्।।4.58.24।।आसाद्य दक्षिणं तीरं ततो द्रक्ष्यथ रावणम्।तत्रैव त्वरिताः क्षिप्रं विक्रमध्वं प्लवङ्गमाः।।4.58.25।।
laṅkāyām atha guptāyāṃ sāgareṇa samantataḥ |
samprāpya sāgarasyāntaṃ sampūrṇaṃ śata-yojanam || 4.58.24 ||
āsādya dakṣiṇaṃ tīraṃ tato drakṣyatha rāvaṇam |
tatraiva tvaritāḥ kṣipraṃ vikramadhvaṃ plavaṅgamāḥ || 4.58.25 ||
大海の果てまで満ちた百由旬を渡りきれば、汝らは南の岸に到るであろう。そこで汝らはラーヴァナを見る—ランカーは堅く守られ、四方を海に囲まれている。ゆえにその地で、ただちに迅速に、汝らの武勇を示せ、ヴァーナラたちよ。
'O monkeys! traverse a hundred yojanas across the sea. On reaching the southern coast you will be able to see Ravana's Lanka defended and surrounded by the sea. Now proceed swiftly and prove your strength.
Dharma is steadfast performance of duty despite formidable obstacles: the ocean and fortified Laṅkā are not excuses to abandon a righteous mission.
Sampāti gives concrete travel instructions: cross the hundred-yojana sea, reach the southern shore, and proceed decisively toward Laṅkā and Rāvaṇa.
Vīrya (valor) guided by purpose: courage is framed as disciplined action in service of truth and justice, not reckless aggression.
