Prayāga Māhātmya
युधिष्ठिर उवाच । अप्याह मे यथातत्त्वं यथैषां तिष्ठते श्रुतम् । केन वा कारणेनैव तिष्ठंति लोकसंमताः
yudhiṣṭhira uvāca | apyāha me yathātattvaṃ yathaiṣāṃ tiṣṭhate śrutam | kena vā kāraṇenaiva tiṣṭhaṃti lokasaṃmatāḥ
ユディシュティラは言った。「どうか、私が聞き及んだとおりに、事の真実をありのままに語ってください。いかなる因によって、これら(教え・行法)は世に定まり、人々に受け入れられているのですか。」
Yudhiṣṭhira
Primary Rasa: adbhuta
Secondary Rasa: shanta
Sandhi Resolution Notes: apyāha = api + āha; yathātattvaṃ = yathā + tattvam (avyayībhāva); yathaiṣāṃ = yathā + eṣām; kāraṇenaiva = kāraṇena + eva; lokasaṃmatāḥ = loka-saṃmatāḥ.
He asks for a truthful explanation of the cause by which certain teachings or practices remain established and become widely accepted (loka-saṃmata).
It implies social and communal acceptance—traditions regarded as authoritative in lived religious culture, often supported by śruti/smṛti, lineage, and exemplary conduct.
It encourages inquiry into the grounds of religious authority—seeking truth (tattva) rather than following custom blindly, while still respecting received tradition (śruta).
