sarve caiva mahātmānaḥ sarve dharmārthakovidāḥ | yeṣāṃ yudhiṣṭhiro rājā kasmād dharme 'parādhnu yuḥ ||
Moral credibility matters: those known to be noble and trained in dharma and artha—especially under a leader like Yudhiṣṭhira—are unlikely to commit deliberate wrongdoing in ethical matters. The verse argues from character and leadership as evidence of righteousness.
Bhīṣma speaks in defense of the Pāṇḍavas’ integrity, asserting that they are great-souled and knowledgeable in righteous and practical conduct; therefore, with Yudhiṣṭhira as their king, they should not be suspected of violating dharma.
