Śiva Grants the Pāśupata Astra (Pāśupata-Śastra Upadeśa) | शिवेन पाशुपतास्त्रदानम्
ते भानुमन्ति चित्राणि शिखराणि महागिरे: । समास्थायार्जुनं तत्र ददृशुस्तपसान्वितम्
te bhānumanti citrāṇi śikharāṇi mahāgireḥ | samāsthāyārjunaṃ tatra dadṛśus tapasānvitam ||
ヴァイシャンパーヤナは語った。大いなる山の、光り輝き奇瑞に満ちた峰々に至ったとき、彼らはそこにアルジュナを見た――不動の志を保ち、タパス(苦行・自己抑制)を具え、厳正な修行に没入していた。
वैशम्पायन उवाच
The verse highlights tapas—disciplined self-restraint and focused effort—as a means of strengthening character and readiness for dharmic responsibility. Ethical power is shown as something cultivated inwardly before it is expressed outwardly.
The narrating voice (Vaiśaṃpāyana) describes how the arriving party reaches the shining, remarkable peaks of a great mountain and finds Arjuna there, engaged in austerity and spiritual discipline.
