Dyumatsena’s Restoration and Sāvitrī’s Disclosure of Yama’s Boons
putro 'ham api viprarṣeḥ sākṣād viśravaso muneḥ | pañcamo lokapālānām iti me prathitaṃ yaśaḥ ||
The verse emphasizes legitimacy and authority grounded in lineage and recognized merit: one’s standing in the cosmic-moral order is presented as publicly affirmed (prathitaṃ yaśaḥ) and connected to a revered source (Viśravas), reflecting how dharmic authority is often narrated through both ancestry and reputation.
Mārkaṇḍeya speaks in self-identification, declaring himself the direct son of the sage Viśravas and stating that his renown is celebrated as that of a ‘fifth Lokapāla,’ in addition to the four well-known world-guardians (Indra, Yama, Varuṇa, Kubera).
