Indrajit and Lakṣmaṇa: Escalation through Concealment
वैशम्पायन उवाच तच्छुत्वा द्रौपदी भीममुवाच व्याकुलेन्द्रिया । कुपिता ह्वीमती प्राज्ञा पती भीमार्जुनावुभी
vaiśampāyana uvāca tac chrutvā draupadī bhīmam uvāca vyākulendriyā | kupitā hrīmatī prājñā patī bhīmārjunāv ubhau ||
ヴァイシャンパーヤナは語った。これを聞くや、ドラウパディーは感覚がかき乱され、ビーマに向かって言葉を発した。怒りに燃えながらも、彼女は慎みと分別を失わず、夫であるビーマとアルジュナの二人に向けて語った。
वैशम्पायन उवाच
The verse highlights an ethical ideal: even when provoked and angry, a person of discernment maintains decorum and speaks with awareness of duty and relationship. Draupadī is portrayed as simultaneously indignant and self-controlled—anger guided by wisdom rather than impulse.
After hearing some preceding statement or event, Draupadī becomes emotionally stirred and addresses Bhīma; the wording also indicates she is speaking with reference to both Bhīma and Arjuna as her husbands. The narrator emphasizes her inner state—agitated yet modest and wise—setting the tone for her forthcoming counsel or reproach.
