Draupadī’s Identification of the Pāṇḍavas and the Onset of the Chariot Engagement
krośatas tava rājendra sa-sainyastha nūpātmaja
The verse underscores the tension between a ruler’s personal anguish and the public arena of duty: a king’s lament is not isolated but occurs before others—especially within the army—where leadership, restraint, and responsibility are constantly tested.
Vaiśampāyana narrates to the addressed king that, at the moment of his crying out, a prince (the king’s son) is described as being positioned among the troops—setting a scene of urgency and emotional upheaval within a military context.
