द्रौपदी-शैब्यसंवादः — Draupadī’s Identification and Counsel on Hospitality
द्रष्टार: सम सुखाद्धीनान् सदारान् पाण्डवानिति । कर्ण! महात्मा पाण्डुनन्दन अर्जुनके ऐसा कहनेपर गन्धर्वने वह बात कह दी
dṛṣṭāraḥ sma sukhāddhīnān sadārān pāṇḍavān iti | karṇa mahātmā pāṇḍunandana arjuna iti vacane gandharveṇa tad uktaṃ yat kṛtvā mantrayitvā vayaṃ gṛhāt prasthitāḥ | “ime kauravāḥ sukhavihīnān pāṇḍavān draupadīṃ ca durdaśāṃ draṣṭum āgatāḥ” iti | na cāhaṃ tvadṛte rājan praśāseyaṃ vasundharām | punaḥ punaḥ prasīdeti vākyam cedam uvāca ha ||
ドゥルヨーダナは言った。「カルナよ、ガンダルヴァは、我らが相談のうえ家を出た、その目的そのものを口にした。すなわち『このクル族は、幸福を奪われたパーンダヴァたちとドラウパディーの惨状を見届けるために来た』と。さらに『王よ、あなたなくしてはこの地を治めぬ。どうかお心を和らげてください—和らげてくださいと、幾度も』とも言ったのだ。」かくして嘆願は執拗に繰り返され、流浪の者の苦しみを見て嘲ろう意図と、屈辱のただ中で王の決意を支えるための計算された忠誠とが露わになった。
दुर्योधन उवाच
The passage exposes the ethical collapse that comes from envy and the desire to rejoice in others’ suffering. It also shows how political loyalty can be performed as flattery—repeating “be pleased” to manage a ruler’s wounded pride—rather than as dharmic counsel aimed at restraint and justice.
During the forest-exile context, the Kauravas have come intending to see the Pandavas and Draupadi in distress. A Gandharva articulates this motive openly. Alongside this, a speaker declares that he would not rule the earth without the king and repeatedly urges him to be pleased, attempting to restore morale after an affront.
