Duryodhana’s Śaraṇāgati and the Pāṇḍavas’ Resolve

उत्पपात दिवं शुभ्र॑ कालेनाभिप्रचोदितम् । ते पिबन्त इवाकाशं त्रासयन्तश्नराचरान्
utpapāta divaṁ śubhraḥ kālenābhipracoditam | te pibanta ivākāśaṁ trāsayantaś carācarān |
マールカンデーヤは語った。「時(カーラ)の力に駆り立てられ、輝ける者は天へと跳び上がった。まるで虚空そのものを飲み干すかのようで、動くものも動かぬものも、あらゆる存在を震え上がらせた。」
मार्कण्डेय उवाच
The verse underscores the irresistible agency of Kāla (Time): even the radiant and powerful are driven by Time’s impulse, and their sudden ascent inspires awe and fear across the whole cosmos.
Mārkaṇḍeya describes a radiant figure (or force) suddenly leaping into the sky, propelled by Time, in a manner so overwhelming that it seems to ‘drink’ the sky itself and terrifies all beings, both animate and inanimate.
