मधुकैटभवधोपाख्यानम्
The Account of the Slaying of Madhu and Kaiṭabha
समाख्याहि मम ब्रद्मान् कि सुखं चिरजीविनाम् | इन्द्रने पूछा--महाभाग! देवता तथा ऋषियोंके समुदाय आपकी सेवामें उपस्थित रहते हैं। ब्रह्म! अब मुझसे फिर यह बताइये कि चिरजीवी मनुष्योंको क्या सुख मिलता है?
samākhyāhi mama brahman ki sukhaṁ cirajīvinām | indra uvāca |
インドラ(Indra)は言った。「おおブラーフマナよ、明らかに語ってくれ。長く生きる者は、いかなる幸福を得るのか。」物語の場において、神々とリシ(ṛṣi)の群れがその聖者に侍し奉るのを見たインドラは、長命における安楽の本質をさらに深く問いただす。すなわち、正しい理解とダルマ(dharma)の成就を伴わぬ長寿は、それ自体では最高の善ではないことを示唆している。
इन्द्र उवाच
The verse frames a dharmic inquiry: longevity alone is not automatically a blessing; the real question is what kind of happiness (sukha) is worthy and attainable in a long life—hinting that true well-being depends on right conduct and insight rather than mere duration of years.
Indra addresses a revered Brahman-sage who is portrayed as being served or attended by assemblies of gods and ṛṣis. Indra then asks him to explain what happiness long-lived humans obtain, setting up a reflective discourse on the value and meaning of extended life.
