Educational Q&A

The passage contrasts ignorance and pride with accountability: even when an offense arises from youthful ignorance, it still demands acknowledgment and a dharmic resolution. Forgiveness is shown as ethically weighty—requested by Lomaśa, but conditioned by Cyavana upon a form of restitution that restores moral balance and social order.

After the king’s young daughter has harmed the sage Cyavana’s eyes in a disrespectful act, Lomaśa urges the sage to forgive her as it was done in ignorance. Cyavana then tells the king he will forgive the offense only if he receives the girl as his wife, presenting this as his truthful condition for pardon.
