पूरयामास वेगेन समुद्रं वरुणालयम्‌ । दुहितृत्वे च नूपतिर्गड्रां समनुकल्पयत्‌,विश्ववन्दित भगवान्‌ शंकर गंगाजीको सिरपर धारण करके देवताओंके साथ पर्वतश्रेष्ठ कैलासको चले गये। राजा भगीरथने गंगाजीके साथ समुद्रतटपर जाकर वरुणालय समुद्रको बड़े वेगसे भर दिया और गंगाजीको अपनी पुत्री बना लिया

pūrayāmāsa vegena samudraṃ varuṇālayam | duhitṛtve ca nṛpatir gaṅgāṃ samanukalpayat ||

その激しい勢いによって、彼女はヴァルナ(Varuṇa)の住まう大海を満たした。そこで王(バギーラタ、Bhagīratha)は、ガンガー(Gaṅgā)を娘として正式に迎え入れ—正当な承認と守護の務めによって、この河の降下を道徳と社会の秩序のうちに組み入れたのである。
