Reconciling Contingency and Human Effort
acale cāpratiṣṭhe cāpy anante sarvamātarau | śrīkṛṣṇa! āv etau bhūtalaṃ ca svargalokaṃ ca dṛṣṭipātaṃ kuru | etayor eva madhye ime sarve prajājanā nivasanti | etau sarvasya mātāpitarau | etau acalau cānantau ca manyete | anyeṣāṃ ādhārabhūtau santau svayam anādhārau ||
Bhīma invokes a cosmic perspective: earth and heaven sustain all beings and are conceived as ‘universal parents.’ By reminding Kṛṣṇa of the vast web of life supported by these realms, the verse underscores ethical responsibility—decisions about conflict must be weighed against their impact on all creatures who live within this shared order.
In the Udyoga Parva’s embassy context, Bhīmasena speaks to Śrī Kṛṣṇa, who is engaged in efforts around negotiation and the looming war. Bhīma’s words elevate the discussion from personal grievance to a universal frame, urging Kṛṣṇa to ‘behold’ the total world that stands to suffer from unrighteous choices.
