Reconciling Contingency and Human Effort
vetsi dāśārha satyaṃ me dīrghakālaṃ sahoṣitaḥ |
Bhīma appeals to personal knowledge and truth: long companionship makes Kṛṣṇa a reliable witness to Bhīma’s real disposition. Ethically, the verse frames self-assertion not as mere pride but as a claim grounded in verifiable character and lived history.
In the Udyoga Parva’s pre-war negotiations and counsel, Bhīmasena addresses Kṛṣṇa directly. He insists that Kṛṣṇa, having long been with him, knows Bhīma’s genuine eagerness for battle and the reality of his strength—countering any misunderstanding of his intentions.
