Udyoga-parva Adhyāya 50 — Dhṛtarāṣṭra’s Appraisal of Bhīmasena (भीमसेनभयवर्णनम्)
kiṃ nu kuryā kathaṃ kuryā kva nu gacchāmi sañjaya | ete naśyanti kuravo mandāḥ kālavaśaṃ gatāḥ ||
The verse highlights the ethical peril of moral dullness (manda) and the tragic momentum that arises when a community submits to destructive impulses as if compelled by Kāla (Time). It frames a ruler’s responsibility: indecision and helpless lament are inadequate when adharma-driven choices are leading one’s own people toward ruin.
Dhṛtarāṣṭra, distressed and uncertain, turns to Sañjaya for guidance. He foresees the Kuru/Kaurava side heading toward catastrophe, describing them as foolish and overpowered by Time—an expression of his fear that the conflict is becoming irreversible.
